Challenge Test in Cosmetics

The protective effectiveness test, namely the "Challenge Test", is one of the most important parameters of the reliability and acceptability of cosmetic products. The effectiveness of the preservatives used in cosmetic products should continue throughout the shelf life.

In other words, "Challenge Test / Protective Efficiency Test / Challenge Test" is carried out in order to determine the protective effectiveness of a cosmetic product. The protective effectiveness test is carried out within the scope of the ISO 11930 standard.

Protective Efficacy Test / Challenge Test is generally performed to evaluate the effectiveness of cosmetic product formulation against Microbial effect. It is not a necessary test, especially for cosmetic products with a low probability of microbial growth.

Within the scope of the Challenge test, the following microorganism strains are used.

• Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 9027)
• Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538)
• Escherichia coli (ATCC 8739)
• Candida albicans (ATCC 10231)
• Aspergillus brasiliensis (ATCC 16404)
