ISO 4314 - Determination of Free Alkali or Free Acidity

The ISO 4314 standard includes a titrimetric method for determining the free alkalinity or free acidity of surfactants. Within the scope of the standard, free alkalinity or free acidity is defined as: the amount in milligrams of potassium hydroxide contained in 1 g of product or required to neutralize 1 g of product.

The alkalinity or acidity, which is determined using phenolphthalein as an indicator, and expressed as "alkaline value" or "acid value", as appropriate, is determined within the scope of ISO 4314 standard.

It is based on the principle of titration of the ethanolic or propanolic solution of the sample with the appropriate one of the following Standard volumetric chemicals in the presence of phenolphthalein as an indicator.

• Potassium hydroxide solution
• Hydrochloric acid solution
• Sulfuric acid solution
