Cosmetic products are products that we use a lot and that come into contact with the skin for a long time. For this reason, the shelf life and the chemical and physical changes that can occur in cosmetic products during this process are important. In cosmetic products, preservatives are added in order to extend the shelf life and protect their chemical, physical and microbiological condition.

In general, preservatives are used in cosmetic products to prevent contamination with bacteria, yeast or mold fungi, their reproduction or chemical deterioration. Properties of preservatives; killing microorganisms or preventing their reproduction. The most important point for the preservatives used in cosmetic products is the amount used. - Should not change the physical properties of the product
- Must kill microorganisms immediately so that they do not adapt to the environment
- Must comply with laws and regulations
- It should be cheap and easily accessible

In general, the preservatives used in cosmetic products are:

- Preservatives that react with acetylacetone
- Isothiazolinones
- Organic Alcohols
- Acidic preservatives
- Halogenated compounds
- Quaternary ammonium compounds
- Alcohols
