Detection of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) in Cosmetics
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) is condensed ethylene oxide and aquatic products in various derivatives and functions. PEGs are used as penetration enhancers in topical dermatological products due to their hydrophilic properties.Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) is used in many products such as surfactants, emulsifiers, cleaning agents, moisturizers and skin softeners. In addition to its use in cosmetic products, it is also used in the pharmaceutical industry as a part of capsules, tablets, pill binders, suppositories, ointment bases, parenteral, topical, ophthalmic, oral and rectal preparations.
It is also used in a wider variety of applications in soaps and detergents, wood preservation, printing, chemical blends, as well as in industries that produce textiles, leather, plastics, resins, paper, ceramics, glass, rubber, petroleum and metals.
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) is generally expressed as PEG-7, PEG-80 according to the amount of ethylene oxide they contain. The lower the amount of ethylene oxide, the easier it is to absorb into the skin. It is used in cosmetics and personal care products due to its properties such as solvent, softener and moisture carrier.
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) is generally composed of 1,4 dioxane and ethylene oxide. Dioxane and ethylene oxide have become a subject of attention due to their carcinogenic risk and the risks of causing environmental pollution. In addition, as we said, its use may cause more effects from toxic effects as it increases skin absorption.
These situations led the consumer to products that do not contain Polyethylene Glycol (PEG).
