Hypoallergen Test in Cosmetics
Depending on the skin structure, the cosmetic products used can be harmful. If you have sensitive skin, some irritation and allergenic reactions may occur. A cosmetic product manufacturer may perform allergen tests on their products. The hypoallergenic expression that consumers see on many cosmetics and personal care products is one of the important tests carried out in this context. The "Hypoallergenic Claim" is explained as follows within the scope of the Turkish Medicines and Medical Devices Agency Guidelines on the Claims of Cosmetic Products. A hypoallergenic claim for a cosmetic and personal care product can only be used if the allergic potential of the product has been minimized. Cosmetic and personal care product manufacturers must rely on scientific evidence and statistically reliable data for their hypoallergenic claims.
If a cosmetic and personal care product is claimed to be "hypoallergenic", the use of the following compounds should be avoided:
• Known allergens
• “Sensitizer” of precursors in internationally accepted sources or scientific publications
• Ingredients defined as “skin sensitizers”
• Ingredients classified as “skin sensitizers” in the legislation on substances and mixtures
• Components for which there is no data on whether they are sensitizers
Basically, since the phrase hypoallergenic does not guarantee that cosmetics and personal care products will not cause allergies, these statements should be avoided in products defined as hypoallergenic.
