Microbiological examinations of cosmetic products should be carried out according to a microbiological risk analysis suitable for the product type and usage area in order to ensure their quality and safety for consumers.

Microbiological risk analysis in cosmetic products is based on several parameters:

— Potential change of cosmetic products;
— Pathogenicity of microorganisms;
— Application of cosmetic product location (hair, skin, eyes, mucous membranes);
— User type (adults, children under 3 years old).

Detection of skin pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans, skin They are important in cosmetics and personal care products, as they can cause eye or eye infections. For this reason, it undergoes analysis and tests according to various standards and regulations.

Detection of Escherichia coli is carried out in cosmetic products within the scope of ISO 21150 standard.

The first step of the procedure is to perform an enrichment using a non-selective medium to increase the number of microorganisms without the risk of inhibition by the selective components present in the selective/differential growth medium. The second stage of testing (isolation) is performed on a selective medium, followed by identification tests.
