Shelf Life and Expiry Date of Cosmetic Products
The expiry date or shelf life for a cosmetic product is the most appropriate period of use determined by the manufacturer for the product. Manufacturers should specify expiration dates on their products as part of their responsibilities in order to prove product safety, apart from legal obligations. In general, over-the-counter drugs require an expiration date. However, there is no expiration date requirement for products such as antiperspirant, anti-dandruff shampoo, toothpaste, sunscreen, which do not have a dosage limitation (provided that they show stability for 3 years).
For cosmetic products with a lifespan longer than 30 months, the time to be consumed after opening should be specified. In other words, the consumer should know how long the product can be used after the first use. For cosmetic products with a shelf life of less than 30 months, the expiry date should be stated.
The products with the shortest duration of use in cosmetic products are the products used in eye make-up. Due to the risk of microbial infection and eye infections, it has a shorter shelf life compared to other products.
