Shelf Life Testing for Cosmetic Products
Shelf life (stability) test in cosmetic products is one of the important test parameters to determine and verify the shelf life of products. Stability tests are based on whether there is deterioration in the physicochemical structure of cosmetic products and microbiological compatibility. In stability tests, cosmetic products are tested by keeping them waiting during their normal shelf life, and the test can be carried out by changing the ambient conditions in order to accelerate it.
- Real Time Stability Test
- Accelerated Stability Test
The shelf life of cosmetic products is determined by keeping the stability tests at 37 C, 40 C and 45 C temperatures under different humidity and temperature conditions such as 10%, 55% and 75%. Shelf life of the product can be interpreted by controlling some test parameters performed on the products after the test:
- Color, smell, appearance
- pH
- Weight change
- Viscosity
- Microbial load
- Antimicrobial activity when deemed necessary
The structure and shelf life of the packaging used outside of the stability tests are important. During the shelf life of cosmetic products, packaging materials should not be broken, cracked or leaked.
