Siloxane (D4, D5, D6) Testing in Cosmetics
Siloxanes, which are in the large silicon family, have a common chemical structure. However, the substances they contain are different in terms of properties and use. Siloxanes such as D4, D5, D6 are banned by the European Chemicals Agency as of 2020. The presence of 0.1% in cosmetic products is the reason for the rejection of the product.D4; The more commonly used “octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane” contains 4 repeating silicon (Si) and oxygen (O) atoms in one cycle. It is an odorless, colorless liquid that is mostly used as an intermediate or basic raw material in the production of rubber, gel and resin. It can also be used as an ingredient in silicone blends used in cosmetic applications such as skin creams and deodorants where it can be labeled "cyclomethicone" or "cyclotetrasiloxane".
D5; The more commonly used “decamethylcyclopentasiloxane” contains 5 repeating silicon (Si) and oxygen (O) atoms in one cycle. In D5, it is an odorless, colorless liquid that is mostly used as an intermediate or basic raw material in the production of silicone rubber, gel and resin. It can also be used as a dry cleaning solvent in closed systems and in cosmetic products such as skin creams and deodorants.
D6; The more commonly used “dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane” contains 6 repeating silicon (Si) and oxygen (O) atoms in one cycle. In personal care products, cyclosiloxanes act as a "carrier", allowing the products to spread smoothly and easily, giving a silky feel during application.
