Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) Studies

Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) is the most widely used objective measurement to evaluate the barrier function of the skin in healthy individuals and patients with skin diseases associated with skin barrier dysfunction such as atopic dermatitis. The water evaporated from the skin is measured with the help of a probe placed in contact with the skin surface and containing sensors that detect changes in water vapor density.

The transepidermal water loss (TEWL) method is especially used for testing cosmetics and personal care products with claims such as "Improves the Skin Barrier, High Barrier Film, Treats Damaged Skin".

In the test performed on the subjects; The person with dry skin type is detected and the cosmetic product is applied to the skin. For accurate results, it should be applied at least once a day. It is expected from the test results that at least 20 – 30% improvement is seen at the end of the procedure.

With the measurement of Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) before and after the procedure, the accuracy of the claim of the cosmetic product sample can be determined.
